Research and scientific use of Stellarium

The high visual appeal and some features of Stellarium that have been developed by around 2009 have invited not only educators but researchers especially from cultural astronomy (archaeoastronomy, ethnoastronomy etc.) to use Stellarium also for scientific purposes. Skyscape archaeology studies the visual impression of the combination of landscape and day and night sky and their potential use. Environmentalists and site curators can simulate impact of light pollution on the appearance of the night sky. One scientist from this field joined the Stellarium team for further development in this field.

Limitations

If you are using Stellarium for scientific work, please be aware about limitations of the basic algorithms. Some examples:

  • The planetary positions of VSOP87 are valid for -4000...+8000, so don't estimate visibility of Venus in the caves of Lascaux or so. See Precision.
  • Stellar proper motion is modelled only from the linear components in the Hipparcos catalog, so 3D spatial motion is not properly modelled. This is also especially irritating with components of close binaries which appear to fly apart instead of following a common motion (Bug report). Both star catalog and implementation must be updated for this.
  • Ecliptic obliquity was constant at the value for J2000.0 and precession oversimplified before V0.14.
  • As of V0.14, the moon has a known positioning error in the range of 1 minute, we should solve that in 2016, hopefully.

Please be aware that as least as long as the version starts with 0, you should cross-check critical times.


A few notes which historians should be aware of, but apparently some are not:

  • Year 0 does not exist for historians, only for astronomers. Historians, be aware:
 Astronomical year +1 = A.D. 1
                    0 = 1 B.C.
                   -1 = 2 B.C.
 etc.
  • Dates before 1582-10-15 are given in the Julian Calendar. Therefore e.g. solstices in the Bronze Age are NOT on June/December 21! Use solar ecliptic longitude of date +90/+270 to set solstice dates and/or the ArchaeoLines plugin for visualisation of the "usual suspects".
  • Time zones were introduced in the 1880s, and daylight saving time in some countries during the 20th century. Earlier, "Local Time" was either Mean Solar Time (Mean Sun transits in the south), or even True Solar Time (12 noon==real sun transits in the south. Given by most sundials, gnomons, stelae, obelisks, etc).

  • If you are using Stellarium in your publications, please always cite the used version number.
